SCHOLARS EXPLORE THE HISTORY

In 18th century England, there was no such thing as a no-strings-Return to Tiffany gift. Landowners and statesmen provided benevolence and patronage in exchange for displays of deference and support from those of lower social ranking.

Although the rise of capitalism appeared to change that, the concept of "gift giving" is still an essential part of everyday life-even in a culture that's centered on commodity exchange, says Linda Zionkowski, an Ohio University professor of English.

"We like to think of the market economy and gift giving as separate, but they are always involved in each other," says Zionkowski. "The split that you begin to see in the 18th century was never entire."

Zionkowski and Cynthia Klekar, an assistant professor of English at Western Michigan University, co-edited a recent collection of essays, The Culture of the Gift in Eighteenth-Century England, that examines the evolution of gift giving. The scholars chose 11 essays that focus on topics such as the philosophy of commercial and noncommercial transactions, the relationship of gifts to commerce, the gift's function in erotic exchanges, and the gift and social conduct.

Zionkowski became interested in the effect of gift giving on social roles after serving as a caregiver for aging Elsa Peretti Open Heart pendant and a daughter. Her offers of gifts such as time, energy, and attention-and the sense of obligation that prompted these gifts-defined her gender role at home and as an educator.

"When a capitalist society begins to see (the gift) as tangential to the workings of a new competitive system, it often becomes the province of women," she says.

Women have become the principal gift laborers-those who dispense charity take care of people in need in neighborhoods, engage in unpaid labor, and provide education for students, she explains. Men take on the roles of gift laborers too, she says, but not to the same extent.

Zionkowski also argues that paternalistic gift giving hasn't disappeared from the capitalist system; it's been re-directed to philanthropic foundations and developing nations. Richer populations provide gifts of aid that come with mandates to develop educational systems, improve infrastructure, and create a responsible citizenry in the image of the benefactors.

Gift giving also lives on in corporate-funded Return to Tiffany Oval tag bracelet. The television show "Oprah's Big Give," for example, was sponsored by three major companies-Ford, Sprint, and Target.

"It's a marketing technique to showcase their benevolence," says Zionkowski. "It makes them appear generous because not only are businesses involved in the market economy, but the gift economy as well."

FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

Have you been wandering the shopping mall trying to find the perfect gift for the holidays? If your Elsa Peretti Teardrop ring one is a boater, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has a suggestion. A new, comfortable life jacket could be the best gift you could ever give, and your loved one ever to receive.

The FWC investigates boating accidents that result in drowning deaths, which may have been prevented had the victim been wearing a life jacket. The FWC recommends boaters wear life jackets all the time while on the water.

"A lot of people don't wear life jackets because they feel they're uncomfortable," said Lt. Ed Cates, the FWC's assistant boating safety coordinator. "However, with the newer models that are belt packs or suspenders, you hardly know you have one on. Replacing an old, bulky life jacket with a newer model would make a great gift."

Belt pack and suspender life jackets are inflatable. Elsa Peretti Eternal Circle cufflinks inflate automatically when a person falls into the water, while others inflate after the wearer pulls a cord. Prices of the belt pack and suspender life jackets start at around $60.

"People don't expect their boat to sink, to be involved in a boating accident or that they will fall overboard, but it happens, so wearing a life jacket all the time makes sense." Cates said. "Even for good swimmers, if you're wearing a life jacket, your chances of survival are greatly enhanced."

Last year, there were 54 boating fatalities. Of those deaths, 38 were due to drowning.

"The gift of a life jacket may be a Return to Tiffany heart tag Charm bracelet of life," Cates said. "The giver and receiver would like that gift best of all.".

The 11th Annual Director's Cuts Gift Guide

2009 has been the year of Taylor Swift, Beyonce and big hits from the Elsa Peretti Starfish necklace of T-Pain, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas. But if you're looking for music gift ideas beyond the blockbusters, WEEKEND EDITION music director Ned Wharton is back with his annual guide to hidden gems for fans of jazz, world music, classical and indie rock.

(Soundbite of song, "In Order")

Mr. JAMES DIERS (Musician): (Singing) Chain, chained, you waited all day, for the delivery's son...

NED WHARTON: A few years ago, guest host Brian Naylor spoke to members of the group Halloween, Alaska here on WEEKEND EDITION. Guitarist and singer James Diers said there's no such place, but he remembers spending a couple of summers in Alaska as a kid.

As a Midwesterner, he said it was his first chance, quote, "to interface with the ocean and very remote places," unquote, and that it ultimately may have influenced his music. On the group's new CD, "Champagne Downtown," the otherworldly grooves can still be Elsa Peretti Starfish earrings in tracks like this one called "In Order."

(Soundbite of song, "In Order")

Mr. DIERS: (Singing) Trade your brightest diamond, for the nearest chandelier.

WHARTON: Another indie rock suggestion comes from our intern Sarah Mollner, who turned me on to this music from The Postmarks. The Postmarks inhabits a world of spaghetti Westerns, Theremins, sweeping strings and retro electronics, all propelled by the ethereal vocals of a female lead singer whose unusual first name is Tim.

(Soundbite of song, "Girl from Algenib")

WHARTON: Born in Tel Aviv, Tim Yehezkely ended up in south Florida, where The Tiffany Signature ring came together. And word has it she holed up in a neighbor's treehouse for days writing the lyrics. The new CD "Memoirs at the End of the World" is beautifully packaged, looking like a well-worn vinyl sleeve from 1965.

Now, here's something from the country side of things.

(Soundbite of song, "Dust of Daylight")

Mr. JAY FARRAR (Musician): (Singing) Hand in hand, there are angels that are holding warning signs...
